In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, topical comfrey cream was evaluated for its benefit in reducing acute upper and lower back pain. Pain during active movement was measured and the cream applied three times daily for five days. Comfrey showed a remarkably potent and clinically relevant effect, and was found to be superior to placebo in the reduction of pai intensity. Comfrey root is an age-old remedy, used topically for centuries, to naturally treat bruising, pulled muscles and ligaments and sprains.
